Listen and complete the blanks.
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis may sound like a big word, but it’s actually pretty simple. You can divide it into two parts: “Photo” is the Greek word for “light,” and “synthesis” is the Greek word for “putting together”. It is using light to put things together. Photosynthesis is how plants eat. They use this process to make their own food. Plants can make their food anywhere as long as they have three things.
The three things are carbon dioxide, water, and light. Carbon dioxide is a chemical in the air. Every time you breathe in, you breath in chemicals in the air, including oxygen and carbon dioxide .
Plants breathe, just like us. They even have little openings. They look like mouths, but we can’t see them without a microscope. When we breathe in, we want to breath in oxygen. Plants want to breathe in carbon dioxide. Plants also drink. This is why you need to water plants, or they will die. Once they have the water and the carbon dioxide, they need light. There are very small cells in the leaves. Inside the cells, there are chloroplasts. Chloroplasts make leaves green and turn the carbon dioxide, the water, and the light into sugar and oxygen. Then plants use the sugar for food, and breathe out the oxygen into the atmosphere. This process is “photosynthesis.”

Dave wrote the description of a scientific development for homework. He chose washing machines. Read his description and complete the missing sentences. Choose from the options. Then listen and check.
The History of Washing Machines
For hundred of years, sailors washed their clothes like this: they put their dirty clothes in a bag, dropped the bag into the sea and then pulled it along the water. These days washing clothes is much easier, but it wasn’t always that way.
The first washing machines were like huge buckets. People used something called a “dolly” to move the clothes around. The dolly was made of wood and had four “fingers” at the bottom. Later models also had a wringer. People used this to squeeze all the water out of the clothes. Wringers were often dangerous. Thankfully, by the late 1930s, the first fully automatic machine was in use. By the 1960s, these machines were cheaper to buy, and this type of washing machine sold millions. Today, washing clothes is just a case of pressing a few buttons and waiting. The washing machine is an invention that people cannot do without.

Read the lyrics of the song and complete the blanks with the suitable words below. Then listen to the song and check your answers.
Photosynthesis
If you want to know,
How a plant grows,
It takes water, air and sunlight,
And makes cellulose.
Every plant can do this.
Fundamental process,
We can call this photosynthesis.
Unlike me and you,
Plants need CO Two,
And they make oxygen.
That stops us turning blue.
Every plant can do this,
Fundamental process,
And we can call this photosynthesis.
It’s a miracle.
How all the chlorophyll
Captures sunlight in the leaves
Of the plants and the trees.
A plant of any size,
Can do it if it tries.
But we’re not green,
So, we cannot photosynthesize.
